I was shocked when I tuned into CNN to watch President Donald Trump’s press briefing with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. I was shocked to hear President Trump propose that the Gaza Strip should belong to the USA, complete with plans for beachfront properties. It was a moment that left many, including myself, stunned. When Kaitlan Collins, host of CNN’s "The Source," asked him about the possibility of military boots on the ground, Trump seemed to entertain the idea. This immediately raised alarming questions: How would the people of Gaza feel about such an audacious proposal? What would be the response from NATO, the UN, the UK, neighbouring countries, and other allies?
Shockingly, Trump suggested transforming Gaza into a “glitzy tourist haven,” akin to the French Riviera. But this announcement could not have come at a more precarious time, with a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas hanging by a thread. The global response to Trump’s statements has been swift and overwhelmingly negative, with leaders and organizations around the world expressing their condemnation.
Critics argue that Trump's plan not only flouts international law but also presents a real danger to the delicate balance of peace efforts in the region. Many view it as a veiled attempt to displace Palestinians from their homeland, rather than give them their own country.
Digging Deep: What's Really Causing This?
Well, on 7 October 2023, Hamas, a Palestinian armed group and political movement in the Gaza Strip, invaded and attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and kidnapping about 250 people. Back in Gaza, the people celebrated in the streets, just like elsewhere in the Muslem world. The internet and social media were on fire as extremists celebrated Hamas’ attack on Israel, and incited more attacks on Jews all over the world.
Hamas described the attack as a response to what it says are many years of Israeli oppression. It refuses to accept Israel as a country in the region and wants a state based on Islam instead.
Note that on 14/05/1948, following the United Nations adoption of Resolution 181 on 29/11/1947, Israel was established and settled in what was then known as British Palestine, as compensation for Jewish support, following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War 1 of 1918 and the abolition of the Ottoman Sultanate on 1/11/1922 by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
British Palestine was seen as a place to settle victims of the German persecution of Jews in Europe. The rest of the post Ottoman empire land in the area was administered by Jordan and Egypt. Arab nationalist movements since then have never accepted Jewish presence in the area, resulting in multiple wars and Israeli expansion. The area hasn't experienced lasting peace since.
Trump’s proposal has triggered a wave of criticism. The strong global backlash underscores the belief that a "two state" solution is the only realistic path to peace.
As the world watches, Gaza’s future hangs in the balance. Will Trump’s plan push the region closer to chaos, or will it galvanize international leaders to redouble their efforts for a fair and lasting peace? The road to stability in the Middle East is indeed paved with challenges.
